Celebrating the life of

William F. Arndt, Jr., MD, PhD

Passed away on June 27, 2024

William F. Arndt, Jr., MD, PhD

William Frederick Arndt, Jr., MD, PhD

William Arndt, Jr. died peacefully at his home on June 27, 2024. He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Lorraine Kraus Arndt, his parents, Emily Vogt Arndt and William Frederick Arndt, and his sister, Carol Ann Fertman. Bill and Lorraine left three sons, William Frederic Arndt, III, Theodore Karl Arndt and Robert Christian Arndt, six grandchildren, Christopher William Arndt, Emily Elizabeth Arndt, Jocelyn Lorraine Arndt, Diana Strano Arndt Hill, Christian Spencer Arndt, and Katherine Rose Arndt, and one great grandchild, Desmond William Hill.

Husband, father, doctor, soldier, friend; Bill was all of these things. Born in March, 1933, in New York, the youngest of two siblings, he grew up in the Westchester County, NY, attended Wesleyan University for undergraduate, Rockefeller University for his masters and PhD in microbiology, and finally completed his education at Georgetown University Medical School, graduating as a physician in the early 1960s. Bill met and married Lorraine in 1955.  He then volunteered for the Navy as a Medical Officer, where he eventually achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander and served as Flight Surgeon and bombardier-navigator for Marine Attack Squadron VMA 242. He served two combat tours in Vietnam where he made lifelong friends while flying with “The Bats” of 242. After His Naval service, Bill moved west and worked for McDonnell Douglas on the “Sky Lab” rescue vehicle project, then started a private medical practice. In this capacity, Dr. Arndt served the communities of Westminster, CA and Nevada City, CA. He then took his family back to the East Coast where he re-entered the corporate world and worked in medical research for companies including Norwich Eaton Pharmaceuticals, Carter Wallace Laboratories as VP of Research and Development, and Bristol Myers Squibb.

William Arndt was a life-long pilot, a fisherman, a skier, a watch repairman, and a thousand other things. But most of all, he was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Like a good bottle of single malt Scotch (his was Glenlivet), Bill Arndt only got better with time. He was so many things to so many people. He never shied from life’s challenges and he became an inspiration to his family. We all loved him and he will be greatly missed.
